SUMMER FAIR HIGHLIGHT – Lee Jackson Antique Maps & Prints

Lee Jackson, Stand 24, will have the following for sale among many other delights at the Summer Fair:

Braun & Hogenberg.

Civitas Exoniæ (vulgo Excester) Urbs Primaria in Comitatu Devoniæ.
£600.00
Cologne, 1617. 325 x 405mm. Coloured. An early map-view of Exeter, showing the city from the south-west, published in the ‘Civitates Orbis Terrarum’.
The elevated viewpoint shows the grid of streets originally laid out by the Romans. The dominant features are the Gothic cathedral of St Peter, the C12th Guild Hall and C11th Norman castle of Rougemont.
The ‘Civitatis Orbis Terrarum’ was the first methodical series of town plans, issued in six volumes between 1572 & jackson11617. The plans were collected from different sources, resulting in a wide range of artistic styles, and were engraved by Franz Hogenberg, with a text edited by Georg Braun. Designed as a sister publication to the Ortelius atlas, the ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’, it included many of the earliest extant plans of many places, including London.
